Abstract

1532969 Direct reduction of iron oxide METALLGESELLSCHAFT AG 10 Dec 1975 [14 Jan 1975] 50712/75 Heading C7D Sponge iron is produced from iron oxide-containing material in a rotary kiln by charging to the kiln an agglomerated carbonaceous reducing agent containing 20-50% volatile constituents which is heated at such a rate that disintegration occurs prior to entry to the reduction zone of the kiln. Preferred reducing agents having 20-50% volutiles are brown coal and sub-bituminous coal which are charged preferably as pellets or briquettes of 1-7 cm. O 2 -containing gas, e.g. air is charged to the kiln by tubes in the shell or as a jet from the discharge end. There is preferably a reducing flame at the final portion of the reduction zone from a burner supplied with oil or gas and insufficient air. Some of the reducing agent may be blown in at the discharge end, and additionally at a low reactivity solid carbonaceous reducing agent may be charged. The temperature in the reduction zone is 900-950‹C.
