Abstract
1,138,695. Recovering iron from dust. STRATEGIC PATENTS Ltd. July 13,1966 [July 20, 1965], No.31432/66. Heading C7D. Finely divided metalliferous material, e. g. blast furnace dust, mill scale &c., is treated for the recovery of its metal content by (a) ensuring that the size distribution of the material is such that no more than 20% is minus 200 mesh (Tyler) and at least 10% is plus 14 mesh, (b) mixing the material with a carbonaceous reducing agent, (c) passing the mixture to a rotary kiln containing a reducing atmosphere at 800 to 1050‹C. (the kiln having a wall temperature of at least 600‹C. ) and (d) recovering the reduced material in a non- oxidizing atmosphere. The size distribution of the mixture is ensured by either mixing coarser and finer fractions or by partial agglomeration. The reducing agent e.g. coal, coke or coke breeze may be 85 - 130% of the stoichiometric quantity, and slagging agents may also be present in the feed material.
