Abstract

1,218,388. Extracting iron. STEEL CO. OF WALES Ltd. June 17, 1969 [June 27, 1968], No.14721/68. Heading C7D. Iron ore and flux are supplied to a lance fed by carbonaceous fuel and oxygen or oxygen enriched air by entrainment in either the fuel or oxident, the proportions of the latter being such that a reducing flame is produced. The feed may contain 5 to 9 parts by weight of iron ore to 1 part of lime, and the mixture may be fed to the lance at 1À5 to 2À5 tons per minute. As exemplified both materials are ground and screened to less than 1/16 inch, and are supplied individually to the oxygen stream from fluidized beds. A proportion of scrap may be placed in the receiving lance and melted by the flame from the lance.
