Abstract

1474357 Reducing gas production ACIERIES REUNIES DE BURBACH EICH DUDELANGE SA 1 Dec 1975 [6 Dec 1974] 49304/75 Heading C5E [Also in Divisions C7 and F4] In the production of molten pig iron with simultaneous recovery of a reducing gas; carbonaceous material is introduced into one zone of a molten bath to cause supersaturation, while in a second zone adjacent to the first zone oxygen is introduced and evolves carbon monoxide with the excess carbon, pre-reduced iron ore also being introduced to, or close to, the second zone where it is melted and finally reduced by the bath carbon. The evolved gases may be used to pre-reduce iron ore. As particularly described carbonaceous material, e.g. coal in a stream of exhaust gas is injected into the bath through lance 70, while pro-reduced ore is fed by gravity through the central channel of a multi-channel lance 80 whereby it is surrounded by a stream of oxygen which agitates the bath. The composition of the gas evolved, and of the bath, may be controlled by adjustment of the inputs preferably so that the CO : H 2 volume ratio of the former does not exceed 3. The preferred fuel is anthracite, lignites or other coal unsuitable for coking, and it is injected in a stream of steam, CO 2 , hydrocarbon or CO 2 -rich waste gas.
