Abstract

A process for the treatment of ferrous metal comprises separately bringing into contact with the molten metal oxygen, or a gas containing free oxygen, and a combustible gas consisting of hydrogen, or carbon monoxide, or a gas containing hydrogen in a form available for combustion, or a gas containing carbon monoxide, or a gas containing hydrogen in a form available for combustion and carbon monoxide. The combustible gas may be coal gas, water gas, producer gas, blast furnace gas, coke oven gas, natural gas, methane, propane, or butane. The oxygen and combustible gas may be supplied through separate lances spaced apart from each other, parallel to one another, or inclined to one another, below the surface or at the surface, or through separate probes at a suitable distance above the surface of the melt. The gases may also be supplied through separate sets of bottom or side tuyeres. Either gas may be supplied above or below the surface and finely divided solid fluxing material may be supplied suspended in either gas or in a separate supply of inert gas. Specification 882,676 is referred to.
