Abstract

A method of treating molten ferrous metals by allowing the subdivided metal to fall cocurrently with a stream of oxidizing gas through a reaction space comprises injecting into the reaction space, at a point below the point of introduction of the oxidizing gas, a combustible gas comprising hydrogen, carbon monoxide, or a gas containing hydrogen in a form available for combustion with or without carbon monoxide. The combustible gas may be coal gas, water gas, methane, propane, butane, natural gas, blast furnace gas, producer gas, or coke oven gas. The reaction space may be constituted by an unpacked refractory lined tower, the oxidizing gas being fed near the top of the tower and the combustible gas through tuyeres at one or more levels below the tuyeres supplying the oxidizing gas. The oxidizing gas may contain fluxes in suspension. Specification 835,159 is referred to.
