Abstract

A method of treating molten ferrous metal by blowing below the surface with oxygen or a gas containing oxygen comprises adding to the blowing gas a combustible gas consisting of free hydrogen or a gaseous hydrocarbon, or carbon monoxide or a gas containing free hydrogen and/or carbon monoxide, the oxygen in the blowing gas being in excess of that required to combine with the hydrogen and/or carbon monoxide. The ratio of oxygen to hydrogen and/or carbon monoxide may be in the range 1:1 to 2:1 by volume. The gases may be added through consumable double lance or a lance comprising two coaxial tubes, or a single lance having a diametral septum. The oxygen and the combustible gas may be mixed before being used if the mixture also contains an oxidation inhibitor e.g. steam, methyl bromide, or carbon tetrachloride, or the amount of combustible gas is outside the limits of combustion. Solid slag forming materials may be added in suspension in either of the gases or in an inert gas. The combustible gases include coal gas, water gas, producer gas, blast furnace gas, coke oven gas, natural gas, methane, propane, and butane. It is stated that the process reduces the amount of fume evolved.
