Abstract
759,224. Refining steel. STORA KOPPARBERGS BERGSLAGS AKTIEBOLAG. July 23, 1954 [July 30, 1953], No. 21577/54. Class 72. A process of refining iron-carbon alloys with oxygen containing gases comprises adding molten metal and slag to an inclined rotary furnace closed at the lower end and having an opening at the upper end, the metal and slag being filled to such an amount that the surface thereof has a minimum level substantially at the intersection of the longitudinal axis with the lower end wall and a maximum level substantially at the lower edge of the opening, introducing an oxidizing gas through the opening, and rotating the furnace. As shown, a furnace 1, set at an angle between 5 degrees and 30 degrees to the horizontal, has a closed end 3 and an end Z having an opening 4 through which metal and slag forming materials and an oxygencontaining gas, e.g. air containing 40 per cent oxygen, may be introduced. The gas may be introduced through a water-cooled tuyere 8 and may be added in sufficient quantity to burn carbon monoxide produced from the metal. The finished metal may be discharged through a normally plugged tap-hole 14, or through the opening 4 by tilting the furnace. Specification 677,349 is referred to.
