Abstract

817,783. Refining iron. BRITISH OXYGEN CO. Ltd. Nov. 25, 1957 [Nov. 30, 1956; March 11, 1957], Nos. 36697/56 and 7953/57. Class 72 A process for the treatment of molten ferrous metal comprises allowing the molten metal to fall freely through a reaction space in contact with a stream of oxidizing gas flowing in the opposite direction. The oxidizing gas consists in oxygen or oxygen containing gases or vapours which, if desired, may contain solid oxidizing agents suspended therein, for example, oxygen, oxygen enriched air, air, carbon dioxide, oxygen diluted with inert gas, or mixtures thereof; water vapour, which may be superheated may be included. The gas may have in suspension solids extracted from the fume of the process, mill scale, iron ore, iron oxide, slag forming and/or fluxing materials, e.g. lime, limestone, or fluorspar. As shown, metal from a blast furnace may be poured into a crucible 16 having holes 18 in the bottom to produce a series of droplets which fall through a shaft 10 having a refractory lining 11 while a stream of oxidizing gas passes upwardly from a tuyere 19. Additional oxidizing gas may be added through tuyeres 20 and 21 and the shaft may be heated by burners 22. The metal may be broken up by a jet of oxidizing or inert gas or by the impingement of two jets of metal. The metal may be discharged below but to one side of the shaft, as shown, or may be discharged outside the tower containing the shaft, Fig. 2 (not shown). The metal treated may be direct from a blast furnace or partially refined carbon or alloy steel, and the final metal may be in the finished state or may proceed to further processing.
