Abstract
840,811. Refining pig iron. UNION CARBIDE CORPORATION. Jan. 23, 1957 [Feb. 8, 1956], No. 2380/57. Class 72 A process of refining molten pig iron comprises subdividing the molten metal into droplets which are allowed to fall vertically while being subjected to the action of an oxidizing gas which flows in the same direction as or the opposite direction to, the flow of metal. As shown, molten pig iron is poured from a ladle 26 into crucible 16 having a perforated bottom to break the metal into droplets which fall through a tower 10 which may be provided with baffles 14 and through which passes a current of oxygen or oxygen enriched air from tuyeres 20. The treated drops are collected in a ladle 22 which may be used to transport the metal to another process, e.g. an open hearth or electric furnace process, and in which further refining, due to the presence of an oxidizing slag, may take place. The oxygen removes silicon carbon, and manganese from the metal which may attain a temperature of 1550‹C. when starting with a charge at 1300‹C. Specification 827,622 is referred to.
