Abstract

738,510. Purifying aluminium. AMERICAN SMELTING & REFINING CO. Jan. 6, 1953 [July 12, 1952], No. 435/53. Class 82 (1). Magnesium is removed from aluminium containing more than 0.1 per cent by establishing a molten pool of aluminium in a confined zone, establishing an atmosphere of aluminium chloride free from oxygen and oxygen-containing compounds that might oxidize the aluminium, and releasing aluminium chloride gas below the surface of the pool to shower the molten metal into the atmosphere above the pool. Chlorine may be introduced under the surface of the pool to form the aluminium chloride, and the atmosphere in the furnace is maintained at a positive pressure below 1 inch of water. The temperature range preferred is 1200-1800‹ F. The Figure shows a plant for carrying out the process and comprises a furnace 1 with charging doors 6 and burners 5. A tube 8 is provided for injecting chlorine. A surge tank 3 with an exhaust conduit 4 is coupled to the furnace by a pipe 2. Pressure control means 10 are provided. After charging and melting the aluminium the burners are switched off, the furnace atmosphere purged by an inert gas, e.g. nitrogen or carbon dioxide (this stage is optional), and the furnace sealed. Chlorine is then admitted through the tube 8.
