Abstract
869,953. Refining steel. RUHRSTAHL A. G. Feb. 25. 1958 [Feb. 27, 1957], No. 6112/58. Class 72 A process of refining steel by blowing with a gas containing carbon dioxide, with or without carbon monoxide, comprises burning carbon monoxide with oxygen and blowing the hot gas formed through the metal. As shown, the molten metal may be held in a vessel 1 having a stoppered outlet 3 and provided with a ceramic tuyere plate 2. A tuyere box 4 is provided below the plate and has an inlet 6 for oxygen and an inlet 7 for carbon monoxide which is burned at a nozzle 5, the products of combustion passing through holes in the plate into the metal. Halogens e.g. chlorine or fluorine or halogen compounds, e.g. carbon tetrachloride, hexachlorobenzene, aluminium chloride, or aluminium fluoride, may also be added to the blowing gas to remove hydrogen. The vessel may be provided with a cover and the process carried out under reduced pressure, Fig. 3 (not shown). Oxygen may be supplied above the surface of the! metal to burn the carbon monoxide produced by the reduction of carbon dioxide by the carbon in the metal. Specification 867,418 is referred to.
