Abstract
Methane-rich gases of high calorific value are made by continuously introducing finely divided solid or liquid carbonaceous fuel, e.g. coal dust or fuel oil, and hydrogen into a reaction chamber to suspend the fuel in the hydrogen at elevated pressure, e.g. 50 to 150 atmos. absolute, for reaction at temperatures in the range 700 DEG to 1000 DEG C. The hydrogen is preferably preheated by heat exchange with the product gas. The hydrogen may be made by catalytically cracking the product gas with steam, or by gasifying a solid or liquid carbonaceous fuel with oxygen (air) with or without steam, the-CO being subsequently converted to CO2 which is, preferably, washed out. Where solid fuel is used, it is entrained by a current of hydrogen; where liquid fuel is used, it is introduced into a current of hydrogen through nozzles. Two specific examples are described.
