Abstract
A gas containing hydrogen is produced by reacting a carbonizable carbonaceous material, e.g. coal or a hydrocarbon-containing oil, with hydrogen or a gas containing hydrogen under a pressure of at least 10 atmospheres and at a temperature of at least 600 DEG C. to produce a hydrocarbon-containing gas which is reacted with steam under a pressure of at least 10 atmospheres and at a temperature of at least 700 DEG C. in the presence of a catalyst to give a gas containing hydrogen and carbon monoxide, the catalyst being arranged in a zone and heated by heat exchange through one or more heat conducting walls by combustion of a fuel with oxygen or an oxygen-containing gas under a pressure which is not more than 10 atmospheres and preferably not more than 5 atmospheres different from the pressure within the catalyst zone. A suitable process for producing the hydrocarbon-containing gas is described in Specification 830,960 [Group XII]. The conversion of the hydrocarbon gas with steam may be carried out with the catalyst in tubes arranged within a combustion zone or the catalyst may be in a vessel containing tubes through which combustion gases are circulated and the catalyst may be maintained in a fluidized state. Some of the heat required for the reaction with steam may be supplied by partial combustion of the hydrocarbon containing gases by adding air and the heating by partial combustion and the heating by combustion gases may be carried out in separate zones. The carbon monoxide in the gas produced may be reacted with steam in the presence of a catalyst to form hydrogen and carbon dioxide and the carbon dioxide removed by scrubbing with a hot solution of potassium carbonate. The catalyst employed in the reaction between the hydrocarbon containing gas and steam may be a reduced nickel oxide supported on alumina and the catalyst for the reaction of carbon monoxide with steam may be iron oxide.
