Abstract
In a process wherein the hot gases resulting from an exothermic gas sythesis in a reactor are used to generate steam, the gas entering the reactor is heated by heat exchange with a hot gas so that the temperature of the gases leaving the reactor is raised and the yield of steam is increased. The exothermic reaction may be the catalytic synthesis of ammonia or methanol. The hot gas used to heat the gas entering the reactor may be the reacted gas mixture leaving the steam generator, or may be produced in another process, e.g. carbon monoxide conversion.
