Abstract
A process for the production of gases containing methane by passing the vapor of paraffinic hydrocarbons with an average of 4 to 15 carbon atoms per molecule, with steam at a temperature of at least 350º C to a bed of a nickel catalyst , thus maintaining the maximum temperature in the catalyst bed at no more than 600º C and substantially no formation of carbon deposits taking place on the catalyst, and reforming the gaseous mixture produced in this gasification stage at a temperature above 550º C such that the conversion of the methane contained therein is carried out, by reaction with water vapor, in carbon monoxide and hydrogen, thus reducing the methane content of the mixture to the desired value, characterized in that the gas mixture produced in the stage of gasification is passed through at least a couple of stages that are, the first, a preheater heated by external combustion r and the second a reforming step in which the preheated gases are subjected to the action of a reforming catalyst, the heat preheater providing absorption in the endothermic reforming step.
