Abstract
A process for forming a hydrogen-rich synthesis gas by steam reforming a hydrocarbon, which comprises reheating the vaporized hydrocarbon and catalytically reforming the hydrocarbon and water vapor mixture with a reforming catalyst, characterized in that preheated naphtha a temperature below 538º C is mixed with steam superheated to a temperature above 538º C to form a gaseous stream at a temperature of at least 538º C having a molar ratio of water vapor to carbon between 2.0 and 6.0, said mixture is reacted partially over a range of less than 1.0 seconds, after which the stream from which the resulting gas stream is brought into contact with a reforming catalyst at a linear speed of 1.52 m/sec at least, said catalyst being externally heated to maintain a reaction temperature of at least 760º C.
