Abstract

A combustible gas comprising CO2, CO, C2H4, CH4, H2 and N2 is made by preheating naphtha to a temperature below 1000 DEG F. (538 DEG C.) and mixing it with preheated air and superheated steam to form a gaseous stream at a temperature above 1000 DEG F., reacting the mixture for not more than one second, e.g. 0.05 to 0.33 seconds, to effect a partial reaction and to raise its temperature to 1400 DEG F. (760 DEG C.), and quenching the product gas (with water or with a heavy hydrocarbon oil) to a temperature below 800 DEG F. (427 DEG C.) to arrest the reaction before equilibrium is reached. The reaction may be carried out over a nickel catalyst to increase the B.T.U. of the product gas, which is free of tars and free carbon. Preferred preheat temperatures are: naphtha 400-800 DEG F., steam 1500-1700 DEG F., air 800-1200 DEG F., and the steam and air are preferably mixed to form a stream at least at 1100 DEG F. before contacting the vaporized naphtha. The product gas may be subjected to a steam catalytic shift reaction, catalytic hydrogenation (Pt or Pd catalyst) and scrubbing, to produce town gas comprising C2H6, CH4, H2 and N2. Pressures up to 22 atmos. are mentioned. Three specific examples are given, including analyses of the product gas, and in one example, of the final town gas. The naphtha used comprised, in weight per cent: paraffins 57.4, naphthenes 32.5, aromatics 9.4, olefins 0.7. Specifications 922,259 and 923,385 are referred to.
