Abstract

<PICT:0772787/III/1> In the production of gases containing hydrogen by catalytic conversion of liquid or gaseous hydrocarbon with steam in successive cycles each consisting of a heating phase and a conversion phase separated from each other by steam scavenging, a layer of catalyst is positioned on a gas and liquid permeable support, the hydrocarbon and steam conversion mixture, the hot combustion gases for heating in the heating phase, and the steam for scavenging, are passed into contact with the catalyst, and the hydrogen-containing gases, combustion gases, and steam, during the respective conversion, heating, and steaming phases are withdrawn through the catalyst. Liquid hydrocarbon and some steam is dispersed through injector 2 from pipe 1 and the remainder of the steam is introduced through pipe 3. The mixture passes through catalyst layer 4 on perforated plate 5, and consisting of 4 per cent or less nickel deposited on rounded grains of e.g. magnesium or chromium oxide, which layer may be 400 mm thick, and the hydrogen-containing gases are withdrawn at 6. The heating burner gases and steam purge are also introduced at 3 and withdrawn at 6 alternately with the conversion gases. The conversion phase may be preceded by a reduction period when recycled product gas is introduced at 3 to reduce any nickel oxide to nickel and this reduction may include vaporization of an aqueous solution of an nickel salt, e.g. formate or nitrate, to deposit finely divided nickel in situ. The vaporization of a nickel salt solution may alternatively be effected during the conversion phase. In Figs. 2, 4 (not shown), gaseous hydrocarbon is introduced through vertical tuyeres or removable horizontal perforated tubes, covered with perforated bricks, situated in the base of the catalyst layer, the heating burner gases and steam on one hand and the conversion gases on the other, flow countercurrent, and combined provision for introducing both liquid and gaseous hydrocarbon may be made. Specification 772,788 is referred to.
