Abstract

Hydrogen is produced from a gas mixture of steam and hydrocarbons containing at least one olefine, by contacting with a nickel catalyst, such as a supported nickel-alumina, at 600 DEG -850 DEG C. and substantially atmospheric pressure. The process is characterized by preheating the mixture to at least 600 DEG C. by passing it through a heated mass of ceramic material, such as mullite, prior to the catalytic treatment. Preferably the volume of olefines in the mixture is not more than 30 per cent, the hydrocarbons contain not more than four carbon atoms per molecule and the preheating range is 600 DEG -750 DEG C.
