Abstract
In a process for producing hydrogen and carbon dioxide from carbon monoxide and steam by catalytic conversion, the reaction is maintained at a temperature between 300 DEG and 400 DEG C. by direct or indirect heat-exchange with a simultaneously occurring endothermic reaction comprising the catalytic cracking or cyclization of hydrocarbons. The catalyst may be in layers and the hydrocarbons sprayed between the layers. The catalyst, which may be the same for both reactions is an iron oxide-chromium oxide and/or a sulphur resistant cobalt-molybdenum catalyst. The initial gas may be mixed with hydrogen and hydrogenatable hydrocarbons and the reaction temperature attained by hydrogenation.ALSO:An endothermic reaction comprising the catalytic cracking or cyclization of hydrocarbons takes place in direct or indirect heat exchange with the exothermic catalytic conversion of carbon monoxide and steam to carbon dioxide and hydrogen whereby the temperature is maintained at between 300 DEG and 400 DEG C. The catalyst, which may be the same for both reactions, may be in layers and the hydrocarbons, e.g. paraffins or naphthanes, sprayed between the layers. An iron oxide-chromium oxide and/or a sulphur resistant cobalt-molybdenum catalyst is used. If the indirect heat exchange method is used, the endothermic reaction may be the catalytic reforming of gasoline. The reaction temperature may be reached by mixing the initial gases with hydrogen and hydrogenatable hydrocarbons, hydrogenation being exothermic.
