Abstract

1379498 Making combustible gas UNIVERSAL OIL PRODUCTS CO 24 April 1972 [26 April 1971] 18868/72 Heading C5E In a process for catalytically steam reforming a liquid or gaseous hydrocarbon to produce methane in a first stage at least a portion of the methane is reacted in a second stage to produce H 2 which is supplied to the inlet of the first stage. The second stage is catalytic and may include further steam. The rest of the methane is passed through two converters in series where H 2 is treated with CO, CO 2 in the gas stream to make more methane. Catalysts mentioned for the two stages include alkali metal- and alkaline earth metal-promoted Cr, Mo, W, Ni, Fe, Co on inorganic oxide refractory supports, and Cu-Cr and Cu-Cr-Mn promoters are mentioned. The second stage catalyst is preferably Fe on silica-alumina. In an illustrated embodiment, straight run naphtha is mixed with steam in a steam : carbon ratio of 1À6 : 1 and heated to 499‹ C. for reaction at 41 atmos. over a Ni catalyst. The effluent is cooled and 30 mol per cent passed, after compression to 52 atmos. and heating to 649‹ C., to the second stage, with added steam.
