Abstract

1359877 Hydrogen-carbon oxide mixtures PULLMAN Inc 26 Oct 1971 49766/71 Heading C5E In a process for producing mixtures of hydrogen and carbon oxides by partially oxidizing a hydrocarbon-containing feed and then catalytically reforming the partially oxidized gas mixture the partial oxidation is performed in a mixing and combustion zone into which the hydrocarbon feed is passed at a hypothetical longitudinal velocity of 15-60 feet per second and oxygen containing gas is concurrently introduced along the longitudinal axis of the zone at a longitudinal velocity of 4 to 16 times the hypothetical longitudinal velocity of the hydrocarbon feed and the hydrocarbon feed flows through the zone so as to surround the faster moving oxygen-containing gas so that the oxygen-containing gas penetrates the slower moving hydrocarbon feed and a stable flame is maintained. Hydrocarbon feed, which can be a partially reformed mixture derived from natural gas, refinery gas, liquid petroleum gas or naphtha, is passed into the zone 21 tangentially via the conduit 1 at 400-1000‹ C. Oxygencontaining gas (e.g. air + steam) at 600- 1600‹ F. is passed into the zone 21 via the conduit 5, suitably in a molar ratio of oxygen to hydrocarbon of 0À02-0À2. The partially oxidized mixture in which, e.g. up to 70% of the hydro. carbon feed has been converted to hydrogen and carbon oxides is passed into the catalytic bed 31, e.g. after a residence time of 0À05-2 seconds in the zone 21. The catalyst bed suitably comprises iron, nickel, cobalt, an oxide of one of these, or molybdenum oxide and can have a top layer of chromia catalyst. The exit gas 19 can have a pressure of 100-1000 p.s.i.g. and a temperature of 1100-2000‹ F.
