Abstract

The gas reforming is carried out in an ERIM gasification furnace in which solid coke or coal are circulated vertically downwards in countercurrent to reducing gases, whereby (a) pure oxygen is injected in very finely divided form into the central zone of the furnace either through small nozzles or through porous refractory plugs or brics, (b) gaseous hydrocarbons or water vapour may be injected with the oxygen, so that their heat of decomposition prevents hot spots resulting from the use of pure oxygen and (c) the furnace is traversed vertically by reducing gases containing a part of the oxidised gases e.g. CO2 and H2O, which are reformed in contact with the coke at high temperature to give reducing gases i.e. CO and H2, at the same time as the decomposition of any hydrocarbons associated with the gas being treated. Enables the conventional ERIM furnace to produce a partially oxidised or reformed gas, whilst retaining the good thermal balance of the original furnace.
