Abstract

792,914. Fuel gas. GAS COUNCIL, WEST MIDLANDS GAS BOARD, and DENT, F. J. April 22, 1954 [Feb. 9, 1953], No. 3632/53. Class 55 (2). Fuel gas consisting predominantly of hydrogen and carbon monoxide and enriched with gaseous hydrocarbons is obtained by thermally decomposing methanol and enriching the resulting mixture of hydrogen and carbon monoxide with gaseous hydrocarbons produced by the thermal decomposition of condensable hydrocarbons in the presence of hydrogen. The methanol and possibly also the condensable hydrocarbons is or are obtained by catalytic synthesis from a gas containing hydrogen and carbon monoxide for example water gas. The thermal decomposition of both the methanol and the condensable hydrocarbons is conducted at a temperature above 700‹ C. and in the presence of a suitable catalyst, suitable catalysts for the methanol decomposition are metals of the iron group in the reduced state, metal oxides such as a mixture of chromium and copper oxides or chromium and nickel oxides, and activated alumina, while for the condensable hydrocarbons metal oxides such as a mixture of chromium and copper oxides or activated alumina may be used. The process is preferably carried out in two intermittently heated zones 1 and 2, each containing a bed of a catalyst suitable for both the thermal decomposition of the methanol and of the condensable hydrocarbons. The zones 1 and 2 are connected by a conduit 3 and have outlets 4a and 4b for the enriched gas. The catalyst beds are first heated to a temperature of 1000-1100‹ C. by burning a mixture of combustible gas and air in the zones which is admitted at 5 and 6, waste gases leave at 7. When the beds of catalyst are sufficiently heated the supply of the mixture of combustible gas and air is shut off and methanol in liquid or vapour form is passed into zone 1 through 8a. The mixture of hydrogen and carbon monoxide obtained passes into zone 2. Condensable hydrocarbons are introduced into zone 2 through 9a and enriched gas is withdrawn through outlet 4a. To equalize the extent to which the beds of catalyst are cooled during a run period, the direction of flow of the gases is reversed during each run period. Thus, after a suitable interval, methanol is introduced into zone 2 through 8b, condensable hydrocarbons are introduced into zone 1 through 9b and enriched gas is withdrawn through outlet 4b. When the temperature of the catalyst beds becomes too low the flow of methanol and condensable hydrocarbons is interrupted and the beds are reheated.
