Abstract
791,754. Producing combustible gases from liquid hydrocarbons. ESSO RESEARCH & ENGINEERING CO. Oct. 21, 1955 [Nov. 26, 1954], No. 34427/54. Drawings to Specification. Classes 55 (1) and 55 (2). Combustible gases are produced from normally-liquid hydrocarbons, e.g. a reduced crude oil, still bottoms or a residual oil, having a viscosity of not less than 45 S.S.U. and preferably not less than 160 S.S.U. at 210‹ F. by contacting them with a fluidized bed of finely divided coke-covered particles in a coking zone at a temperature between 1830-2200‹ F. The bed may be fluidized by means of C 1 to C 3 gaseous hydrocarbons, hydrogen, steam or carbon monoxide and the fluidizing gas may be preheated. The temperature of the coking zone may be maintained by circulating some of the coke-covered particles to and from a separate heating zone maintained by partial combustion at 100-500‹ F. and preferably 200-400‹ F. above the temperature of the coking zone. The process may be operated at pressures between 0 and 50 p.s.i.g. and the feed-stock preheated to 600-700‹ F. In starting up the process the operating temperature in the coking zone may be obtained by partial combustion in the zone using pure oxygen. Specifications 791,755 and 791,756 are referred to.
