In a process for producing combustible gases containing hydrogen and C 1 and C 2 hydrocarbons, a hydrocarbon feedstock having a viscosity not less than 45 S.S.U. at 210‹ F. is contacted with a fluidized bed of coke-covered, finely divided particles in a coking zone and the resulting gaseous and vaporous products are treated to remove C 3 and higher hydrocarbons, the removed C 3 and higher hydrocarbons being recycled, preferably after being heated to 1000‹ F., to the coking zone. The C 3 and higher hydrocarbons may be removed by cooling and washing with C 6 or higher hydrocarbons at from 60‹ to 70‹ F. The hydrocarbon feedstock may be a petroleum hydrocarbon such as a reduced crude oil, still bottoms or a residual oil and preferably has a viscosity not less than 160 S.S.U. at 210‹ F. Coke-covered particles from the coking zone may be passed to and from a heating zone to maintain a coking zone temperature between 1450‹ and 2200‹ F., preferably between 1800 and 22000 ‹ F. The particles in the coking zone may be fluidized by means of C 1 to C 3 gaseous hydrocarbons, hydrogen, steam or carbon monoxide and the fluidizing gas may be preheated to a temperature of not less than 1000‹ F. The residence time of the hydrocarbon feedstock in the coking zone is usually from 0.1 to 2 seconds. Specification 791,754 is referred to.
