Abstract
<PICT:0714780/III/1> Hydrocarbon oil, e.g. crude petroleum residues, is supplied to a hot fluidizing bed of inert material into which also a mixture of steam and air is introduced so as to effect a coking reaction at p a temperature of about 1000 DEG -1800 DEG F. with formation of carbon, oil vapours and a producer gas mixture. The mixed gas and vapour reaction products pass to a separating zone in which a gas mixture of carbon monoxide carbon dioxide, hydrogen and nitrogen is led off from oil products such as gas oil and gasoline. Crude oil heated in the lower portion of a fractionator 10 by direct contact with the reaction products is distributed over a bed 18 of powdered or granular material, e.g. silica or alumina, which is fluidized by steam and air admitted through a conduit 20. The heat of reaction is controlled by means of a steam generating coil 23 within the bed. The reaction products after heating the crude fuel ascend through contact devices 11 to form varying fractions, e.g. gas oil withdrawn through a line 33 and gasoline through a line 34. Gaseous effluent passes through a condenser 36 and receiver 37, condensed gasoline being pumped into line 34.
