Abstract
465,548. Water - gas generation. LICHTENBERGER, T., and KAISER, L. July 6, 1936, No. 18670. [Classes 55 (i) and 55 (ii)] In the production of water gas by the reaction of steam and solid, liquid or gaseous fuel in a shaft generator e surrounded by a salt melt bath d, the gases generated, comprising hydrogen and carbon monoxide, unconverted gases such as carbon dioxide, methane and heavy hydrocarbons, together with the fuel residue are then subjected to a steam and heat treatment in the salt melt bath to obtain a final gas mixture of hydrogen and carbon monoxide only which is withdrawn from the bath through a conduit i. Steam is admitted to the shaft and bath through inlets l and k. The melt is fed to the bath from a heating chamber a. The process may be applied to brown coal or peat and if the fuel has a sufficiently high water content, steaming in the shaft is unnecessary. In the case of liquid or gaseous fuel, such as tar or methane respectively, the fluid is forced into the shaft under pressure, together with the steam through inlet l, the sluice g being closed. A temperature of 900‹ C. in the shaft is specified. U.S.A. Specification 1,921,711 is referred to.
