Alcohols.-In the conversion of lower into higher alcohols by the action of carbon monoxide or water gas, the heat required for the reaction is supplied wholly or partially by preheating the gases used and not through the pressure resistant Walls of the plant. The gas may be preheated electrically and the mixture may be passed over catalytic materials. The electrical prehea.ter is preferably constructed of materials resistant to hydrogen and hydrogen sulphide. The gas may also be heated by partial combustion.
