Abstract

461,402. Coking processes ; gas producers. DIDIER - WERKE AKT. - GES. April 21, 1936, No. 11378. Convention date, July 22, 1935. [Class 55 (i)] Gas of stoichiometric composition is obtained from fuels such as brown coal, lignite, flame coal, by preheating the fuel by external heating and removing the products, carbonizing the fuel in an externally heated chamber and leading the high temperature gas with steam through a body of incandescent coke resulting from the carbonization to effect the substantial conversion of the gases into the desired mixture of hydrogen and carbon monoxide. Fuel, e.g. in small pieces or briquettes, is fed through a preheating chamber 3 heated by waste gases supplied through a duct 8. Steam, carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulphide, and tar vapours are successively emitted as the fuel temperature rises to about 400‹ C. and are removed through off takes 11 ... 15. The fuel descends to a gasefication chamber 4 comprising a carbonization zone in the upper third of the chamber in which a temperature of at least 850‹ C. is maintained, a reaction zone into which steam is admitted at different levels through ducts 25, 26 and traverses the zone to an outlet 29 in admixture with the carbonization gases, and a water gas zone in which steam is admitted through inlets 27, the water gas generated being drawn off at the upper end and passing with the reaction gas through outlet 29. Or the water gas may be drawn off at the lower end as when the zone is formed as a separate chamber. The gasefication chamber is heated by the combustion of gas in flues 20, waste products passing through a recuperator 22 for preheating the combustion air or gas and thence to the heating flues of the fuel preheater. The mixed reaction gas and water gas may comprise 85-90 per cent hydrogen and carbon monoxide in the ratio of 2 or more than 2 to 1. For the treatment of brown coal the preheating, carbonizing, reaction, and water gas chambers may be of iron, silicon carbide material, silica material and fireclay respectively.
