Abstract

464,989. Carbonizing fuel briquettes. KOPPERS' INDUSTRIEELE MAATSCHAPPIJ NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP, H. Oct. 29, 1935, No. 29870. Convention date, Oct. 29, 1934. [Classes 51 (ii) and 55 (i)] Briquettes made from agglomerated bituminous coal are first oxidized at a temperature insufficient to expel hydrocarbons, and below the softening point of the coal, after which they are heated in the absence of air to a higher temperature to harden the fuel. The agglomerates are oxidized in a chamber 3 by the passage of oxidizing gases at about 200‹ C. for about four hours, and are then fed into a hardening chamber 8 externally heated to between 550 and 750‹ C. steam being admitted through pipes 25. Hot flue gases from the retort setting 9 pass partly through duct 15 to pipe 17, and partly through pipe 21 to a steam generator 22, and by pipes 23 to rejoin the other gases, whereby their temperature is regulated. A fan 20 supplies air through a pipe 19, the mixed air and flue gases passing by pipe 5 into the oxidizing chamber 3. An extractor fan 28 ensures the passage of the gases and their withdrawal by pipe 27. Steam from the generator 22 passes by a pipe 24 to the bottom of the chamber 8. The retort chambers 8 are heated by gas burners 11, the hot combustion products rising in flues 10, Fig. 2, and passing down flues 12 to outlet flues 13, the flues 10 and 12 being interconnected by passages 14 so that some of the gases may pass back into the flues 10. By this means a uniform heating of the retort is obtained over its whole length.. The upper . part of the retorts 8 are heated by flues 33 communicating with the heating channels 10 by openings 35. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 describes also the application of the process to particles or pieces of coal. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
