Abstract
244,337. Rude, J. May 11, 1925. Retort furnaces; charging and discharging.- In a process for the production of coke, gas and tar from solid fuel in a two stage carbonization process fuel in an internally heated retort a is discharged into a container c hung from rails x and subdivided by partitions e into compartments each of which feeds externally heated retorts b. The air or other fuel heating gas enters a heat interchanger l, Fig. 1, by an inlet n, heats the fuel in the retort a by passage therethrough and passes by pipe q to the combustion chamber g where it meets fuel gas from burners s the hot combustion gases passing through a perforated wall h around retorts b and through a perforated wall i and heat interchanger l. If fuel gas is used as the heat carrying medium to retort a the functions of pipes q and t are reversed. In a modification whereby a high temperature coke is obtained two heat interchangers are used through which the combustion gases pass in succession the heater of lower temperature preheating the contact heating gas and that of higher temperature the resulting gas supplied to the retort combustion chamber.
