Abstract

218,512. Humphreys & Glasgow, Ltd., (Rusby, J. M.). Aug. 2, 1923. Coking processes.-Bituminous coal is coked by passing a heated mixture of coal gas and water-gas through the charge in a chamber 4, and the gas is withdrawn by a fan 19 and passed through hot coke in a chamber 3 and down through a re-heater 2 from which it is returned by pipes 53, 9 to the coking chamber. The coke from chamber 4 is delivered through a valve 5 into the coke chamber 3 into which steam is passed by a pipe 29 to generate water gas. The gas generated is discharged by pipes 23, 22 to purifying apparatus. A valve 25 may be operated to close pipe 18 so that only gas which has been purified is circulated from a pipe 21 through the coke cooler and heater. The stoves 2 are heated by burning gases from a producer 1, but the process may be carried out without the use of such stoves by introducing air at an inlet 28 whereby a small quantity of the circulating gas will be burned to supply heat for the carbonizing process. The air supplies to the stoves or to the inlet 28 may be automatically controlled by a pyrometer situated at about the point 9.
