Abstract

343,435. Low temperature carboniza.- tion ; gas-producers. JOHNSON, J. Y., 47, Lincoln's Inn Fields, London.-(I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges. ; Frankfort-on. Main, Germany.) Nov. 11, 1929, Nos. 34366/29 and 23967/30. Addition to 301,975, [Class 55 (i), Coking &c.]. [Class 55 (i).] In the low temperature carbonization of bituminous fuel, in which the fuel is heated by a blast of hot gases so that it is kept in a state of vigorous motion on its bed, as described in the parent Specification, a retort having several grates one above the other is employed. These grates are permeable to the gases but not substantially to the fuel. The fuel from the upper grate may be gasefied on the lowermost one. Grates Rl .. R4 are superposed in a shaft S, the fuel passing through valves F from one grate to the next. Grates R1 and R2 act as drying zones, grate R3 as low temperature carbonizing zone, and R4 as a gas producer which is operated by air-carbon-dioxide, or steam, or mixtures of these, blown in at an inlet L with such a force as to keep the fuel in motion on the grates. The distillates leave by an outlet G. Ash, or partially burned coke is removed through a valved outlet F4. Air, or carbon-dioxide or other gas, may be led in through pipes C. German Specification 437,970 is referred to.
