488,567. Coking processes ; drying coal &c. SCHUFTAN, P. M. Jan. 8, 1937, Nos. 631 and 35468. [Class 55 (i)] [Also in Group XIII] In the drying, or high or low temperature distillation of solid fuel such as coal, shale, peat, or wood, the fuel is subjected in a vertical shaft to internal heating by the sensible heat of the combustion products of a gaseous or liquid fuel with oxygen, or a gas richer in oxygen than air, without combustion of the fuel itself. Water in the form of liquid or vapour may be introduced into the shaft to control the temperature of the combustion products. A suitable fuel is water gas which may be obtained by steaming the hot coke residue, but hydrogen and oxygen from the electrolytic decomposition of water may be used, or tar obtained from the process. A shaft 1 contains the fuel the residue from which may be discharged continuously by an extractor 4 into a hopper 5. Pipes 9, 10, and 11 supply oxygen, liquid or gaseous fuel, and steam or water spray respectively to a combustion chamber 7, from which the hot gases enter the shaft through ports 8. Inlets 12 for steam or water spray are arranged at the bottom of the shaft at various levels. A gas offtake 3 is provided at the top. With high temperature carbonization, the temperature of the hot coke may be sufficient to provide the whole of the water gas which is burnt with oxygen at the bottom of the heating zone, in which case the combustion chamber 7 may be dispensed with. Intermittent working may be used.
