Coking processes; retorts.-In the distillation of coal, peat, and lignite, in a vertical retort, a heat-transferring combustible gas, free from air or oxygen, is supplied through inlets 12 at the base, and the heating is maintained by continuously supplying air through openings 10 in the zone wherein the distillation is practically complete. The retort comprises an upper section 1 which may be hearted electrically at the zone 7, and a lower section 4 in which the coke is cooled; hot combustible gas may be supplied through openings 8. According to the Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a), liquid hydrocarbons may also be injected through the openings 8, and the gas and steam are supplied through openings 12. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
