Abstract

Carbonaceous substances, e.g. high-volatile coals, lignite, or peat are heated to change their coking qualities with a solvent preferably such as coal tar, water gas tar, and tar oils, though petroleum oils are not excluded, to a temperature, preferably above 400 DEG C., at which the coal decomposes, the temperature being lowered before it is completely decomposed. Solutions of the coal prepared as described in Specification 268,372, [Class 91, Oils &c.], are preferably employed and heated in an autoclave, this condition also facilitating the removal of ash and pyrites, the incorporation of fillers or catalysts, or chemical treatment as with dehydrogenating agents such as sulphur or oxygen. In an example 100 parts of poorly coking high-volatile coal are heated in a rotating autoclave with 200 parts of anthracene to 400-430 DEG C. for an hour. The combined product may be used in paints or fuels. A semi-coke of colloidal nature may be obtained by entirely devolatilizing the coal.ALSO:Carbonaceous substances, e.g. high-volatile coals, lignite, or peat, are heated to change their coking qualities with a solvent preferably such as coal tar, water gas tar, and tar oils, though petroleum oils are not excluded to a temperature, preferably above 400 DEG C. at which the coal decomposes, the temperature being lowered before it is completely decomposed. Solutions of the coal prepared as described in Specification 268,372, [Class 55 (ii), Gas manufacture &c.], are preferably employed and heated in an autoclave, this condition also facilitating the removal of ash and pyrites the incorporation of fillers or catalysts or chemical treatment as with dehydrogenating agents such as sulphur or oxygen. In an example 100 parts of poorly coking high-volatile coal are heated in a rotating autoclave with 200 parts of anthracene to 400-430 DEG C. for an hour. The combined product may be used in road materials, crack fillers, pipe-covering and roofing materials, or moulding compositions.
