Abstract
282,826. Barrett Co., (Assignees of Miller, S. P.). Dec. 31, 1926, [Convention date]. Ascension pipes; condensing processes.-In the operation of a battery of coal distillation retorts, some of the ascension pipes of which are provided with means for injecting tar into contact with the hot distillation gases as described in Specification 282,367, the vapours and gases produced in the remaining retorts are cooled separately from the vapours and gases produced by the action of the gases on the tar in the first mentioned retorts, whereby the production of tar and the distillation thereof to obtain pitch and oils are carried out simultaneously. In a battery of retorts 28 the central retorts are provided with the usual uptake pipes 29 and cross over main 30 leading to condensers 31, 32 and tar collecting tank 23 and dehydrator 24. The remaining retorts have their uptake pipes fitted with spray nozzles 9 to 'which tar is pumped from the tank 24 and the gases and vapours produced are delivered through cross over mains 30<a>, 30<b> to condensers 31<a>, 31<b>, 32a, 32b. The tar mav be recirculated in order to obtain pitch of varying carbon content, and tars obtained from other sources may be used.
