Abstract

Dispersions of coal in oil, poor in or free from ash, are made by kneading a paste of water and coal with about an equal amount of oil, and removing the ash and water which separate, leaving a coherent plastic mass. Separation is assisted by adding a small amount of an acid or base to the paste or to the oil. Substances specified are hydrochloric, sulphuric, acetic, or oleic acid; phenol, caustic soda or potash, or aniline. The kneading process may be assisted by heating at 40 to 100 DEG C. under reduced pressure, or by addition of substances which wet the coal in preference to water, such as tetrahydronaphthalene, benzene, aniline or high - molecular alcohols. In examples; coal, lignite, coke, or anthracite is finely ground with water containing acid in a tube mill or oscillating device as described in Specification 439,968, [Group II], to form a paste, which is then kneaded with an equal amount of coal - tar oil, mineral oil, lignite tar or hydrogenated tar oil, in a Werner-Pfleiderer or roller mill through which it is passed several times. The separated water and ash is removed and the plastic mass of coal and oil is further kneaded, adding oil if necessary, with water which contains a small amount of acid or caustic soda. This is repeated and then a final washing with water is effected. Lignite containing water or coal slimes from coal washing may also be treated. The product is used as a fuel or may be formed into briquettes. The dispersions can also be used as lubricants.ALSO:Dispersions of coal in oil, poor in or free from ash, are made by kneading a paste of water and coal with about an equal amount of oil, and removing the water and ash which separate, leaving a coherent plastic mass. Separation is assisted by adding small amounts of an acid or base to the paste, or to the oil. Substances specified are, hydrochloric, sulphuric, acetic, or oleic acid: phenol, caustic soda or potash, or aniline. The kneading process may be assisted by heating at 40-100 DEG C., under reduced pressure, or by addition of substances which wet the coal in preference to water, such as benzene, aniline, tetrahydro naphthalene or high molecular alcohols. In examples, coal, lignite, coke, or anthracite is finely ground with water containing acid, in a tube mill or oscillating device as described in Specification 439,968, to form a paste which is then kneaded with an equal amount of coal tar oil, mineral oil, lignite tar, or hydrogenated tar oil, in a Werner-Pfleiderer or roller mill through which it is passed several times. The separated water and ash is removed and the plastic mass of coal in oil is further kneaded, (adding oil if necessary), with water containing acid or caustic soda. This is repeated, and a final washing with water is effected. Lignite containing water, or coal slimes from coal washing may also be treated. The product is used as a fuel or lubricant.
