Abstract
Coal or cannel is chlorinated and extracted with suitable solvents such as benzene, chloroform, acetone, ether, carbon tetrachloride, carbon bisulphide, alcohol and pyridine. The residue from the extraction on carbonization yields a highly absorbent carbonaceous mass.ALSO:Coal or cannel is chlorinated and the products extracted by suitable solvents such as benzene, chloroform, acetone, ether, carbon tetrachloride, carbon bisulphide, alcohol and pyridine. The extracted products are resinous in character and contain chlorine. The chlorination may be carried out by passing dry chlorine through the finely divided coal, by dropping the finely divided coal through chlorine or the coal may be in suspension in a liquid medium, aqueous or otherwise, and the chlorine gas diffused through such medium or the chlorine may be prepared in situ. In some cases the liquid medium may also be a solvent for the extraction enabling chlorination and extraction to proceed simultaneously. After chlorination the hydrogen chloride that has been produced may be removed under a vacuum or by washing with water. The residue from the extraction on carbonization is a highly absorbent carbonaceous mass.
