Abstract

In the production of hydrogen by separation under pressure from coke-oven gas which is first washed with water under pressure to remove water-soluble constituents, an increased yield of hydrogen is obtained by adding the first gaseous fraction evolved on releasing pressure from the wash-water to fresh coke-oven gas prior to washing. The hydrogen may be separated, for example, by liquefying the washed gas at -180 DEG C. and 25 atmospheres pressure and fractionally vaporizing.
