Abstract

Formaldehyde is obtained by passing a mixture of methane and carbon dioxide at increased, reduced, or atmospheric pressure through an electric field generated by high frequency, high voltage currents, the concentration of carbon dioxide being equal to or greater than that of the methane. The gas mixture is preferably preheated and subjected several times to the treatment. Catalysts such as calcium or magnesium carbonate may also be located in the field.
