Abstract

Gaseous mixtures are separated by adsorption in a substance such as active carbon or silica gel, followed by fractional desorption at successively decreased pressures. The fractions may be subjected to a repetition of the treatment. The process is particularly suitable for the partial or complete separation of mixtures of permanent gases. An example describes the separation of water gas into fractions suitable for (1) ammonia synthesis, (2) methanol synthesis, and (3) the conversion of aliphatic alcohols into acids.
