Abstract
322,701. Johnson, J. Y., (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). Feb. 22, 1929. Addition to 307,529. Hydrogen.-The process of the parent Specification is modified by the replacement of part of the air used in the production of a hydrogennitrogen mixture for ammonia synthesis by carbon dioxide, which may be that obtained from the gas mixture resulting from the electric arc treatment. A mixture in the correct proportions for the synthesis can thus be obtained. In an example, a mixture of 1.8 cu. m. of methane, 2.8 cu. m. of air and 0.8 cu. m. of carbon dioxide is treated in an electric arc operating with a current of 2.6 amps. and 1400 volts. The gas mixture obtained is treated with steam in the presence of nickel to convert the carbon monoxide into carbon dioxide which is then removed by absorption, giving a hydrogen-nitrogen mixture in the ratio of 3 :1. A part of the carbon dioxide separated is again exposed to treatment in the arc in admixture with further air and methane.
