Abstract
274,610. Casale, L. June 2, 1926. Oil gas.-In the production of mixtures of hydrogen and carbon monoxide free from methane from gaseous hydrocarbons and steam, or from gaseous mixtures containing hydrocarbons, oxygen and steam, the reaction is carried out at above 1000‹ C. in an excess of steam and at a pressure below that of the atmosphere. When the mixed gases are cooled to about 500‹ C. the carbon monoxide may be converted catalytically into hydrogen and carbon dioxide from which pure hydrogen is obtained after elimination of the carbon dioxide. If air or air enriched with oxygen is used in place of pure oxygen a hydrogen-nitrogen mixture such as is required in ammonia synthesis is obtained.
