Abstract

Phosphorus or phosphoric acid, and a gaseous mixture containing nitrogen, hydrogen and, if desired, carbon monoxide are obtained by reducing tricalcium phosphate with carbonaceous materials and materials such as silica or alumina in a blast furnace with a blast rich in oxygen, removing the phosphorus or its compounds from the gaseous mixture obtained, and reacting the carbon monoxide with steam to obtain hydrogen and carbon dioxide, which latter, together with the impurities, is removed, the hydrogen then being combined synthetically, wholly or in part and in one or more successive operations, with one or more of the other constituents of the gas mixture. The oxygen content of the blast can be adjusted to give a final mixture of nitrogen and hydrogen in the proportions for ammonia synthesis. Part only of the carbon monoxide may be converted with steam, and a mixture obtained in which the volume of hydrogen equals twice that of the carbon monoxide plus three times that of the nitrogen, which mixture can be used in succession for the syntheses of methanol and ammonia. The residual gases may be used again in a cycle. The conversion with steam and the previous separation of phosphorus may be effected under pressure.ALSO:A gaseous mixture containing nitrogen, hydrogen and carbon monoxide is obtained by reducing tricalcium phosphate with carbonaceous material, and materials such as silica or alumina in a blast furnace, with a blast rich in oxygen, removing the phosphorus or its compounds from the gaseous mixture obtained, and reacting the carbon monoxide with steam to obtain hydrogen and carbon dioxide, which latter, together with the impurities, is removed. The oxygen content of the blast can be adjusted so that after conversion of part of the carbon monoxide with steam, a mixture is obtained in which the volume of hydrogen equals twice that of the carbon monoxide plus three times that of the nitrogen, which mixture can be used for the synthesis of methanol.
