Abstract

Hydrogen-nitrogen mixtures suitable for the synthesis of ammonia are prepared by igniting hydrocarbons in the gaseous phase with air, then oxidizing the carbon monoxide in the product to carbon dioxide by treatment with steam in the presence of a catalyst such as iron oxide, and finally removing the carbon dioxide. The oxygen present at the ignition stage should be sufficient to combine with all the carbon of the hydrocarbon to form carbon monoxide, but insufficient for complete combustion. It is desirable to preheat either or both of the reacting gases for the ignition stage and to employ fireproof material, such as magnesia, which preferably contains iron or nickel or oxides thereof, during or immediately after the partial combustion. Other gases such as hydrogen or carbon monoxide may be present. An example is given of the combustion of the methane contained in coke oven gas.
