Abstract

In the production of water gas rich in hydrogen by the reaction of the gas in the presence of steam and burnt lime, the sensible heat produced during a part of the gas-generating process is stored and utilized for the reaction and also for the regeneration of the lime. The lime k in a vessel c is heated by the blast gases from a generator a secondary air being added if desired at e<3>. The "blow" is followed by an up or down "run," the water gas flowing through a heat storage chamber b before contact with the hot lime in vessel c. The gas poor in monoxide passes to a scrubber d and then to storage. Extra steam may be passed into chambers b, c through valves 7, 8. The <PICT:0372089/III/1> reacting mass k is regenerated in the following blast run. In a modification, the chamber b together with a steam boiler is constructed integrally with the generator. In a further modification, the plant is adapted to the continuous production of water gas by using two reaction vessels c, the transformation of the monoxide occurring in one vessel whilst the other is being regenerated. Oxides, hydroxides, or carbonates of alkaline metals, alkaline-earth metals or heavy metals such as iron, chromium, nickel, cobalt, or zinc and also Ankerite may be added to the lime.
