Abstract

<PICT:0680159/III/1> Hydrocarbon residues such as heavy oils, tars, and cracked residues are subjected to incomplete combustion with such an amount of oxygen or gas containing free oxygen as to yield a gas mixture, containing 0.7 to 0.9 volumes of hydrogen per volume of carbon monoxide, which is then used in the catalytic synthesis of oxygen-containing organic compounds. Water vapour, carbon dioxide, and/or methane may be added to the oxygen and the combustion should be carried out under elevated pressure. Fuel oil is pumped to combustion chamber 3 from tank 1 and burns with oxygen passing through line 4 and preheater 5. The hot synthesis gas passes through reaction chamber 6 having heat exchanger 7, heat exchanger 5 and cooler 8 to desulphurization device 9. The gas is then passed to synthesis furnace 10 containing an iron catalyst, and the products are separated in device 11 comprising a condenser, a washer, and an activated carbon absorber. The remaining gases pass to wash tower 12 and are washed with water under pressure, which passes to depressurization vessels 13, 14 and degasifying tower 15 to recover carbon dioxide, which is returned to the combustion chamber, and wash liquid, which is returned to tower 12. Methane, obtained as residual gas from tower 12, may be returned to the combustion chamber, or added to the gas before the synthesis furnace. In alternative arrangements the hot gases at say 1,600 DEG C are passed directly through a gas turbine after reaction 6 or the heat exchanger 7 is replaced by the tube system of a closed circuit turbine system.
